A Google Business Profile can help an eligible local business appear when customers search on Google Search and Maps. But profile optimization starts with eligibility and accurate representation, not adding more keywords to a business name.

This checklist is written for legitimate storefront and service-area businesses in Oulu, Helsinki, Tampere and other Finnish markets.

1. Confirm that your business is eligible

Google Business Profiles are intended for qualifying businesses that interact with customers in person at a business location or travel to customers. Online-only businesses generally do not qualify on that basis alone.

A virtual office, rented mailbox or unstaffed address should not be used to manufacture a local presence. Review current Google rules before creating or changing a listing.

2. Claim and verify the correct profile

Search for an existing profile before creating a new one. Follow Google’s available verification steps and ensure ownership is held by the business. Avoid unnecessary duplicate listings.

Document verification access and keep administrators current when agencies or employees change.

3. Use your real business name and best categories

Your profile name should match the name customers see in the real world. Do not insert “best plumber Helsinki” or other promotional keywords unless those terms are genuinely part of the official business name.

Choose the most accurate primary category and relevant additional categories that describe actual services, not speculative expansion plans.

4. Complete accurate business information

Keep address or service area, phone, website, hours and holiday hours current. Storefronts should provide accessible accurate locations. Service-area businesses that do not receive customers at their premises must follow address-hiding requirements.

Use clear service descriptions and current photographs of the real business, team, premises or work, as appropriate.

5. Strengthen the linked website

Link to a relevant page that clearly explains the service, geography, contact process and useful details. Build dedicated local pages only when there is genuine market-specific value.

Avoid mass-generating nearly identical city pages that swap one location name. A high-quality Oulu page could explain local service delivery, case examples and actual coverage.

6. Develop an ethical review process

Ask genuine customers for honest feedback using compliant methods. Do not buy reviews, gate feedback to solicit only positive ratings or offer incentives that manipulate sentiment.

Respond respectfully and never disclose private customer information in public replies.

7. Measure local search outcomes

Google Business Profile performance and Google Search Console are separate sources. Track profile interactions, relevant calls or website visits where available, and qualified enquiries received.

Google describes local ranking primarily through relevance, distance and prominence; no single activity guarantees the top local position.

8. Maintain the profile over time

Review hours during Finnish public holidays, handle business changes quickly and remove outdated services or imagery. Monitor unauthorized edits and resolve duplicate or suspended profiles using official processes.

Frequently asked questions

Can an online-only business get a profile?

Only if it separately satisfies Google’s in-person eligibility rules.

Can I list a virtual office?

Not simply to establish a market presence; review Google’s staffed-location rules.

Should I publish a GBP for each city I serve?

No. Additional profiles require distinct eligible business locations.

How can I rank in Oulu and Helsinki?

Focus on eligible genuine locations, relevance, authority and locally useful website content.

Do reviews guarantee higher Maps rankings?

No. They are one potential prominence signal, not a guarantee.

Is GSC CTR the same as Maps CTR?

No. They are different datasets and should be reported separately.
